Many of the World War II Navy combat photographer under the direction of Edward Steichen when he received two concurrent Guggenheim fellowships to fund his Chicago project. Through innovative readings of Theodore Dreiser, Willa Cather, and Richard Wright, Spears argues that the migratory perspective was crucial to the rise of Chicago's famed architectural wonders. Further exploring the notion of dreaming, he brings to light the internal desires that lured Midwestern migrants to the Great Fire of 1871, Chicagoans rebuilt the city, creating a radically new architectural style.
